About this work
Evil Spirit, 1963- shows a dark band set against a brighter ground. The paint spreads out and thins at the edges. Helen Frankenthaler often poured liquid colour onto raw paper, letting it settle on its own. At a distance the band reads as one shape. Up close you see the uneven edges of the wash.
This fine art piece uses a matte surface that keeps the tones even under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside timber furniture can match the room. The surface does not shine.
It works on a wall that gets low morning light. Hang it so the top edge sits around eye level. From a doorway you notice the dark field first, and the washed ground second.
