About this work
Fiesole - 1953 by Nicolas de Stael shows a Mediterranean hillside with houses spread across the slope. The paint is laid in broad strokes with colour patches for roofs and trees. A clear sky sits above the built forms. Nicolas de Stael worked in post war european abstraction, using thick paint and landscape subjects.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The white frame gives Fiesole - 1953 a clean line around the sheet. That white edge separates the painted hills from the wall behind it. The frame finish stays plain and does not pull attention from the painted ground.
On a kitchen wall, you notice the roof patches first and the brushwork later. The picture reads well from the counter, where you stand while making coffee. The painted slope fills the view without crowding the room.
