About this work
Lee Bontecou made dark shapes and torn forms that press toward the viewer. Fourth Stone 1963 keeps that pull in a flat print.
Dark forms sit against a worn ground, with small cuts and rough edges that suggest something built by hand. The marks look weighted, as if each shape was pressed into the sheet by hand. A fine art print keeps those forms steady on paper.
The matte surface holds the dark tones without a shine, so the rough edges stay soft under a lamp. You see the cuts and the uneven outline best when you stand a little away from the wall. It works on a hallway wall with doors on each side, where the dark forms read against the pale wood trim.
