About this work
Fugue Number 2 - 1943 opens on a deep ground where thin lines and small strokes gather into loose shapes. Richard Pousette-Dart worked through the post war American painting years, building pictures from repeated gestures. The lines shift as they move across the page, and the marks stay separate instead of blending.
This fine art print uses a matte paper so the darker tones stay soft and the small marks keep their spacing. On a pale wall the picture reads as a quiet band of marks, while the paper stays flat under normal room light.
In a study, the print hangs on the left wall above a desk. You notice the tighter marks near the desk first, then the wider lines as you turn toward the door.
