About this work
Gare Montparnasse the Melancholy of Departure 1914 shows a station platform under a long shadow. A train stands at rest, and the arches behind it pull the eye toward the distance. The muted colours and quiet marks come from the metaphoric painting practice of Giorgio de Chirico.
The print is fine art on matte paper, so the greys stay flat and the shadows do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture both work with the scene.
In a hallway with a long wall, the platform line leads from the door toward the far corner. You notice the empty tracks and the still train before the frames behind it.
