Gargoyles — Fine Art

Gargoyles - 1948 by Morris Graves shows a few bird like figures perched on stone ledges. The marks are thin and careful, with pale grey washes holding each shape. The forms read as carved stone meeting living wings, built up in layers of watercolour and ink across the sheet.

This fine art print is ready to hang on arrival. The white frame gives the picture a clean edge that holds the dark shapes without closing them in. You see the frame line set apart from the paper, so the wings and stone keep their own space.

Hang it in a hallway with a single overhead light. From the far end you notice the perched figures and the pale wash, then you step closer and see the thin ink lines under each shape.
