Happy Death Stone

Happy Death Stone uses broad colour washes spread across the sheet. Sam Francis layered watery pigments so the edges stay wet and open. The marks sit close together, leaving small gaps of bare paper between them. You see the flow of each wash and the way one tone settles near another.

The fine art print comes ready to hang. The white frame gives this picture a clear edge on the wall. The frame edge keeps the washes from fading into the room. The paper stays matte, so the lighter tones stay muted and do not shine under a lamp.

This works above a bed in a bedroom. From the doorway you see the open fields and the dark band near the bottom. Up close the small runs of pigment show how the wash moved.
