About this work
Homage to the Square Autumn Climax 1963 is one of a set of nested square shapes that Josef Albers painted in the mid twentieth century. The inner squares use warmer tones against cooler ones, so the edges seem to shift as you look.
The method belongs to the colour field and geometric abstraction period, where repeated forms test how colour changes perception. The object is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel, and it arrives assembled when the ready to hang option is used.
The matte surface keeps the soft tones calm and stops glare under a lamp. It sits above a plain mantel in a living room. From the sofa you see the stacked shapes first, then the colour step near the inner edge.
