About this work
Houses near the gravel pit 1913 draws a quiet settlement of low roofs across a worked ground. The eye catches the nearest roof first, then drifts to the lighter gap beyond.
Most of the picture stays open, so the buildings feel spaced out. Paul Klee keeps the marks plain and the shapes simple. The layout leaves room for the eye to rest.
A fine art print of the picture sits well on a pale plaster wall, set a little above chair height in the reading corner. The light frame picks up the wood of the bookshelf behind it. From the armchair you read the nearest roof line plainly, and the empty ground stays calm.
