About this work
Hyperbolic surfaces - 1959 by Tomas Maldonado shows a flat field of colour with several curved lines drawn across it. The lines bend and cross without meeting at right angles. They look like thin paths on a smooth ground. The marks stay close together in places and spread apart in others.
A fine art print keeps the drawn look of the original marks. The frame finish can follow the wall it goes on, so a light frame sits on a dark wall or a dark frame sits on a pale wall.
On a study wall above a desk, the curved lines draw the eye from one side to the other. From the doorway you notice the shape of each curve. When you sit at the desk you see the small spacing between the lines.
