About this work
Coloured bands and sharp marks move across the sheet in Improvisation 31 Sea Battle 1913. The image looks like a clash of shapes and boats on open water. Wassily Kandinsky worked in the abstract painting movement, where lines and colour carry the idea instead of a clear scene.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. A matte surface keeps the painted marks from shining under a lamp. The frame gives the sheet a firm edge so the busy colours hold together on the wall.
On a dining room wall you notice the bright bands first, then the smaller marks as you pass by. The busy shapes sit well above a sideboard where people pause at meals.
