About this work
L Estaque 1906 by Andre Derain shows a harbour view built from blocks of colour. The painted strokes press hard into the surface and leave a rough edge on each shape. Short thick lines stack to make the boats and the houses feel solid.
A white frame gives the picture a clean border that does not pull attention from the colour blocks. The frame edge holds the painted shapes in place and keeps the busy colour from spilling off the sheet. This fine art print uses a white finish that sits quietly against the bold paint.
It works above a kitchen table where morning light falls across the paper. From the breakfast chair you see the thick strokes first, then the colour blocks behind them. The white frame stays out of the way on that wall.
