About this work
La Perruche Et la Sirene 1952 shows a bird and a siren side by side, drawn with quick pencil lines. The marks sit close together, one dark and one light, on a plain ground.
The fine art print comes ready to hang. Henri Matisse worked with simple shapes and a few strokes to hold the two figures together. A light frame sits on a dark wall, so the pale lines stay clear.
You stand close, about arm length away, and see the pressure change in each line on the paper. The paper is matte, so the grey marks do not shine under a lamp. It works above a desk, where the eye lands on the two shapes and the thin black lines.
