La rue

La rue - 1956 shows a street view built from overlapping lines and small patches of colour. The marks run side by side and some are darker than others.

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva often builds city scenes this way, with layers of pencil and paint. The fine art print keeps those thin lines sharp and the pale ground stays even.

The matte paper does not shine under a lamp, so the soft greys stay visible. A light frame on a dark wall lets the lines stand out. It looks right on a hall wall seen from the stairs, where the marks read as a narrow street going away.
