About this work
The title Le Mont Palatin - 1958 points to a hill in Rome. Charles Lapicque often painted such places with loose strokes and a limited range of tones. Broad patches of colour sit on the sheet, with open space left around them.
The fine art print uses matte paper so the paint tones stay soft under indoor light. The frame finish can follow the room, with a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. You see the painted strokes and the open areas without a shine.
A hallway with pale paint and one lamp gives enough light to read the marks. From the far end you take in the broad patches, and walking closer you notice the thin strokes around the hills. The scene stays calm on that stretch of wall.
