About this work
Legend From the Portfolio Revolving Doors 1926 shows a door turning in space. The picture splits the view into two halves. One side stays dark and the other side opens lighter.
Empty space around the door gives the scene room to breathe. Man Ray made the picture during the surrealist period, when ordinary objects shift into unfamiliar places. The fine art frame in white keeps the picture edge clear against the wall.
The white frame edge sits cleanly beside the dark side of the door and does not pull the eye away from the turning shape. The black frame finish would sit against the lighter opening and make that side feel steady. You notice the door shape from the hallway when you walk past, and the two tones read before the small marks do.
