About this work
Lemon shapes sit on a pewter plate in Lemons on a Pewter Plate 1929. The surface uses flat colour areas and simple outlines, a way Henri Matisse often worked in still life. The yellow fruit and the metal plate read as clear blocks side by side.
The fine art print uses matte paper so the yellow and grey stay soft, with no shine from a lamp. A light frame suits a dark wall and a dark frame suits a pale wall, or a wood frame sits near wooden furniture.
On a kitchen wall at eye level, the plate and fruit stay clear from across the room. Up close, the colour edges show as broad flat areas. You see the simple forms and the quiet yellow against the grey.
