About this work
Madridscape, 1959- shows a broad wash of colour opening across the page with thin lines and soft edges pulling the eye through the space. Helen Frankenthaler built her soak stain paintings by letting pigment seep into raw support, and the picture follows that practice.
This finish is a fine art print set in a frame, with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the colour fields quiet and the edges stay soft rather than sharp, which suits the thin paint wash motif across the page.
On the landing wall near the front door, the wide colour band reads first from the hallway, then the pencil underdrawing marks show at the top of the stairs as you pass by.
