Maelstrom, 1992- shows a single dark mark pressed through a pale ground, with the brush laying down a long curve and a few broken edges around it. The stroke reads fast, with the pressure easing off at the end.

The fine art frame in white gives the picture a clean edge on the wall, so the dark curve does not drift into the plaster. The frame finish keeps the line steady and the light ground stays quiet beside it.

In a hallway with a low bulb near the turn, the dark line reads first and the pale field holds back. From the landing you see the whole sweep, and near the door the broken edge of the stroke catches the light.
