About this work
Mappa 1978 shows a grid of small painted squares laid over a map of the world. Each square carries a letter or a number, and the colours shift slowly from one country to the next. The surface stays matte, so the lettering reads clearly against the soft ground.
The fine art print uses matte paper that holds the flat colour without shine. A light frame sits on a darker wall, or a dark frame on a pale wall, and the frame finish can follow the room. You see the letters and the country shapes without glare under a lamp.
It works on a study wall at shoulder height, where the desk lamp gives a soft even light. From the chair you read the country names and notice the small differences between the coloured squares.
