About this work
Marceilles December 1936 1936 shows a measured line drawing of a coastal town, built from steady black marks on a pale ground. The forms read as architecture and water from across the room, then resolve into separate strokes when you stand near. The surface stays matte so the grey tones stay flat under a lamp.
This fine art print sits in a frame with a back panel, made to hang as a complete piece. The clear black lines of MC Escher keep their shape on the paper, and the light ground stays even across the sheet.
On a stairwell wall you notice the roof lines first, then the small hatch marks on the sea. The image stays readable at both distances.
