About this work
Mathematics - 1962 opens on a field of loose painted marks set against a soft ground. Broad strokes and layered brushwork build the image from the artist practice of Norman Bluhm. The work belongs to the art informel tradition of post war abstraction, where gesture and colour carry the picture.
The fine art print sits on a matte sheet that holds the greys and earth tones without shine.
In a study above a desk the writer sees the broad shapes first, then the small pencil marks on the sheet. The light from a side lamp falls across the marks and the frame finish follows the wood of the desk.
