About this work
A broad wash of thin paint spreads across the surface inside Nature Abhors a Vacuum, 1973-. Helen Frankenthaler laid the colour in soft fields with open gaps between them. The tone shifts slowly from one edge to the other.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the pale tones quiet under indoor light. You see the soft edges clearly when you stand near it.
In a bedroom, the open areas let the paint breathe. From the doorway you catch the broad shape of the wash, and from the bed you notice the slow change of tone across the surface.
