About this work
Negroes Fighting in a Tunnel by Night by Alphonse Allais places two dark figures inside a narrow passage. The eye enters between them and rests on the darker shape on the left. A plain background keeps the scene open. The work belongs to a French humour drawing tradition from the late nineteenth century.
A fine art print set in a frame with a back panel holds the drawing. The matte surface softens the black tones so the tunnel stays deep without shine. Alphonse Allais drew with ink and wash, and the print keeps those flat tones readable.
In a narrow hallway the picture sits on a side wall near the stairs. You notice the two shapes first, then the empty space around them. The hallway light makes the black figures stand out against the pale ground.
