About this work
New Amsterdam II - 1970 shows a view of buildings fading into a dense city. Lines cross and overlap, creating layers of windows and roofs.
Grey and ochre tones sit behind a grid of darker strokes. Maria Helena Vieira da Silva worked in an abstract style shaped by city grids and layered space. The image reads as a map drawn in paint rather than a clear street scene.
The fine art print sits on matte paper, so the greys stay soft and the dark lines do not shine back under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the pale ground stand out, and a wood frame beside wooden furniture ties the tones together. On a study wall at shoulder height, you notice the crossing lines first, then the small shifts in tone as you step closer.
