No.1 Untitled - 1948 shows large rectangular colour fields stacked across the sheet. The bands run in muted tones with blurred edges that soften into one another. Mark Rothko worked with thin paint layers to let the colour spread slowly.

The fine art print sits on a matte sheet with a light finish so the tones stay flat under room light. You can choose a frame that follows the room: a light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.

It works on a study wall above a desk. From the doorway you see the broad colour bands, and when you stand closer the soft edges show how the paint settled into the paper.
