White sits over dark bands in No. 14 Horizontals, White over Darks - 1961. The picture shows two broad colour fields one above the other. The upper field is light and the lower field is deep. Mark Rothko used this stacked layout across many works. Soft edges blur the line where the two tones meet. The look is calm and plain.
