About this work
No.2 - 1950 shows two broad painted bands stacked on the sheet. The upper band holds a warm brown tone, and the lower band holds a darker one.
Mark Rothko painted these fields with soft edges, so the colours meet without a hard line. From a doorway across the hall, the two shapes read as one quiet block of tone.
On the fine art print, you stand closer and see the blurred borders between them. The frame finish can match the room, with a light frame on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall. You notice the steady colour from the kitchen doorway, where the morning sun sits at a low angle and the lower band stays the darkest.
