North Sound — Fine Art

North Sound - 1979 by John Hoyland places wide painted bands over a worked ground. The colour blocks sit flat against each other, with hard edges where one field ends and the next begins. You can read the shapes from across the room, then see the brush drag and small overlaps when you stand near the wall.

The fine art frame comes in white, wood, dark wood or black. A white frame keeps the painted fields open at the edge. A dark wood frame sets the coloured blocks against a sharper line, so the picture reads as a clear unit on the wall.

A hall wall with a low bulb above the picture gives even light on the surface. From the landing you take in the broad colour bands, and near the door the brush passes show the paint handling.
