A single ochre rectangle drifts above a field of pale gray. Number 17, 1966, by John McLaughlin. The ochre is neither warm nor cold, simply present. It floats, not quite centered, leaving a narrow margin of gray that widens toward the edges. The paint is flat, uninflected, yet the rectangle seems to tilt slightly, as if resisting the pull of the frame. Hang it where morning light crosses the wall�above a low credenza or beside a narrow hallway�so the ochre can shift with the sun.
