About this work
Number 5 1948 1 sits on a wall with lines, splashes and drips spread across the picture. The marks run in many directions on a pale ground, with black and white showing through the layers.
Jackson Pollock made this kind of work by pouring paint and moving the hand fast. Abstract expressionist painting uses this kind of gesture and speed in the mid twentieth century. The frame follows the room you choose, so a light frame can sit on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall.
On a hallway wall near the stairs, the small splatters come into view as you pass. The big lines stay clear from a few steps away. A fine art print keeps the feel of that fast, poured paint approach.
