Orange And Lavender No. 72 (1970) — Poster

A single lavender disc hovers above a field of orange. This is Orange And Lavender No. 72, Gottlieb’s late-period distillation of form and hue. The disc, soft-edged and slightly off-center, casts no shadow. Below it, the orange ground is neither flat nor uniform; faint horizontal striations suggest depth without perspective. A thin charcoal line bisects the canvas, grounding the composition without interrupting the dialogue between color and shape. Hang it where afternoon light lingers—above a credenza or between two windows—and let the colors breathe into the room.
