About this work
Three coloured bands of orange, black and white run across the picture in a simple arrangement. The painting keeps to flat areas of paint with clear edges between them. It belongs to the postwar British abstract painting of William Scott, where colour and shape carry the image without figures or objects.
This fine art print is ready to hang on arrival. The white frame gives the picture a clean border on the wall. The frame edge sits flush against the plain bands, so the orange reads plain and the black stays sharp. A black frame would make the lighter band recede more.
It hangs on a narrow wall in a kitchen passage. From the sink side you see the three bands without detail, and from the table you notice the hard line where orange meets black.
