About this work
Orlando - 1980 shows a rough field of marks against a pale ground. The painting uses liquid paint and quick brushwork that Albert Irvin was known for. Shapes sit loosely on the surface and the colours read as broken patches rather than flat blocks.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte paper holds the light tones without shine, so the paint effect stays flat and readable under a lamp. The frame and back panel keep the sheet flat on the wall.
You see it best from the kitchen doorway, where the big patches hold their shape. From the table you notice the smaller runs of paint and the gaps between them. The picture stays calm on that wall at breakfast.
