About this work
Painting No 9 1952 by Philip Guston sits in the abstract expressionist painting period. Broad strokes and rough painted shapes cover a flat ground. Philip Guston built the image from thick paint strokes that press forward, and the marks stay plain and direct.
The fine art print uses a matte finish so the paint strokes in this picture do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the painted shapes read clearly, and the frame finish can follow the room.
It hangs on the stairwell wall at shoulder height, where the painted shapes catch the low light from the top landing.
