About this work
Place des Lices St Tropez 1904 shows a sunlit square in a southern town. Warm ochre walls stand against pale sky and cooler stone. The painted shapes sit side by side with room between them. A few figures turn on the ground.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The eye rests on the open patch near the centre. Henri Matisse uses broad colour areas and clear outlines in this town view. The frame finish changes how the edge reads on the image.
Dark wood pulls the square tones inward and makes the painted ground feel tighter. Black gives the picture a sharp edge and separates the colour blocks from the wall behind it. You notice the frame line at the side of the square and the open ground above it.
