About this work
Pranzo Italiano - 1973 by Helen Frankenthaler holds broad poured colour across the sheet. The paint soaks into the ground and leaves soft edges where one tone meets another. The movement belongs to post war colour field painting, where thin washes sit on an open ground and the paint runs in loose bands.
The fine art print is matte, so the washed tones stay even under a lamp and there is no shine on the grey passages. A light frame on a dark wall lets the soft colour edges read clearly, and a dark frame on a pale wall keeps the painted field steady.
It suits a study wall above a wooden desk, seen from the doorway. You notice the broad painted area first, then the small shifts between one wash and the next as you pass by.
