About this work
Quilt - 1963 shows a measured layout of rectangular colour blocks arranged in rows. Thomas Downing built the picture like a textile pattern, using sharp edges between the bands so each block keeps its own shape. From the far end of the room you read the whole grid as one calm field.
This fine art print comes in a frame with a back panel and arrives assembled when the ready to hang option is used. The matte surface keeps the colour edges clean and stops a bright lamp from adding a shine.
It fits on a narrow wall in a hallway between the two doors. You pass it every morning and notice the small gaps between the blocks before you reach the handle.
