About this work
Railroad Gate - 1989 shows a gate set in a landscape with painted bands over a quiet ground. Ronnie Landfield worked in colour field painting, building flat colour with broad strokes and hard edges. The sheet holds that kind of painted surface.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The frame finish can follow the room, with a light frame on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall. A wood frame sits beside wooden furniture. The matte paper gives the painted bands a soft look without shine under a lamp.
It works on a stairwell wall where you pass by each day. From the landing you read the gate shape and the colour bands, and at the turn you notice the small painted lines near the edge of the sheet.
