About this work
Reclining Figure I shows a body shape built up from layers of paint and scraped marks. Frank Auerbach builds his figures through repeated drawing and painting over the same area. The form sits on the sheet as a drawn and painted subject rather than a clean outline.
This fine art print keeps the marks visible on matte paper, so the scraped lines stay readable and the paint layers do not flatten into one tone. A light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture can follow the room you choose.
It fits a hallway wall with a lamp above it, where the long shape is seen from the landing. The built up marks show first, and the faint pencil lines appear when you stand nearer.
