About this work
Red, Blue - 1969 by John Hoyland opens on a painted field divided by a hard line. A red block meets a blue block, and the eye moves between the two flat areas. The left side carries more weight. Some edges stay soft where the colour thins out.
The fine art print uses a matte paper that does not shine under a lamp. A light frame can sit on a dark wall, or a dark frame on a pale wall. The frame finish follows the room, so the painted blocks stay the focus.
In a study, the picture hangs on the wall beside a desk. From the chair you see the two blocks and the hard line across the middle. The blue side reads cooler when the room light is low.
