About this work
Relational Painting, Tondo #1 - 1944 shows a round field built from flat rectangles and straight bands. The shapes sit in a hard edge grid with no soft transitions. Fritz Glarner worked in geometric abstraction using measured colour planes and clear structure. This fine art print keeps that layout plain and readable.
The frame is black or white or wood or dark wood. The frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. A white frame lets the flat colour blocks stay open. A dark wood frame sets the coloured planes apart from the plaster.
It hangs above a kitchen counter. From the worktop you see the round shape first, then the rectangles inside it. Around noon the light runs across the flat colours without shining on the surface.
