About this work
Red and blue areas sit side by side in Relief in Red and Blue - 1956. The two flat colour blocks share one edge. You can see where the artist cut or layered the surface to make the join. Geometric abstraction works with simple colour to hold the eye on one place.
A fine art print on matte paper keeps the red and blue soft and flat. The colours stay separate on the wall, which suits the hard cut of the original composition. A light frame on a darker wall lets the two colours read clearly.
In a dining room, the print hangs on the short wall beside the table. At dinner you notice the red block first, then the blue beside it. The join between them stays clean when the room is lit from one side.
