About this work
Relief in Relief 1945 uses layered shapes that sit on top of a flat background. The marks spread across the surface with no single focus. Kurt Schwitters built his work by joining small pieces of material into one surface. The picture feels assembled rather than painted.
This fine art print arrives ready to hang with a metal hanger on the back that fits onto a nail or screw. No separate frame is needed. The matte paper keeps the layered look soft instead of glossy.
In a hallway above the coat hooks the layered shapes read from the floor as a single surface. From the kitchen doorway the same marks break up into smaller bits. You notice the joined edges first.
