About this work
Riverhead, 1963-64- shows a broad field of thin paint laid over an open ground. Helen Frankenthaler worked with stained colour that soaks into the surface, and here the paint sits in soft bands with room between them. The areas of colour settle low on the page and leave the top open.
The fine art print uses a matte paper so the washed tones stay flat and the surface does not shine under a lamp.
It fits a hallway wall near the turn where people slow down and look sideways. From that distance the colour fields hold together, and the thin lines between them stay quiet. You notice the open stretch at the top before you reach the door.
