About this work
Rivet Lilt - 1962 shows a measured set of pale colour bands laid over a quiet ground. The bands sit in a steady row, each one stepping into the next.
Thomas Downing worked in a hard edge style that keeps edges clean and shapes plain. You see the paint laid in flat passes rather than loose brushwork. A fine art print on matte paper keeps those edges steady and the greys from looking shiny.
The surface stays even where the colour changes, so the bands read as clear steps. Hang it on a hallway wall with a single bulb overhead. From the middle of the hall you see the row of bands, and the pale ground holds the edges in place.
