About this work
Rocks in the Vallee du Loup 1925 shows a rocky hillside on the page. Broad shapes of earth and stone sit against a pale sky. The marks feel quick and direct, with some open paper left around the edges. Henri Matisse often used simple shapes and bold colour in his work.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte paper keeps the lighter tones soft and the frame gives the picture a clean edge. You see the whole group of shapes at once from the doorway.
On a narrow landing between two turns of stairs the picture reads as a broken hill against the plaster. From the top step you notice the larger stone shapes first, then the small pencil lines on the paper.
