About this work
Second Letter Zen Spring - 2009 by Brice Marden shows thin drawn lines laid over a pale ground. The marks follow a steady rhythm from one side to the other.
Brice Marden often worked in beeswax and pigment, and that practice shows in the quiet handling of the line. A fine art print on matte paper keeps the greys from shining. The frame finish gives the picture a clean edge against the sheet.
A black frame finish sets the drawn line apart from the pale field. Hang it in a hallway where the morning light falls on the left side. The narrow band reads first, then the pencil marks come into view.
