About this work
Seventh Stone 1968 by Lee Bontecou takes its place among the abstract works of the mid twentieth century. The sheet holds a central shape pressed into a lighter ground, with rough cuts and dark edges carrying the eye inward. The marks feel worked and uneven.
The fine art print sits on a matte sheet that holds the grey tones without shine. A light frame lifts the pale ground, a dark frame gives weight to the dark centre. Place it low on the wall so the cut edges read across the room.
On a narrow hallway wall the dark opening draws the eye down the passage. From the bedroom doorway the pale outer field stays soft under the ceiling lamp. The cut shapes show plainly from that distance.
