About this work
Shatter, 1953- by Helen Frankenthaler shows a pale sheet with thin marks laid across it. The paint soaks into the paper and leaves open edges. The lines feel loose and spread out across the surface. Helen Frankenthaler worked in the colour field painting movement and often used the soak stain method on raw paper.
This fine art print arrives ready to hang, with a metal hanger fitted to the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. No separate frame to buy. The matte paper keeps the thin paint edges soft and there is no shine under a lamp.
It hangs on a pale hallway wall near a side table. From the doorway you see the broad washes first, then the small marks when you stand closer. The thin lines stay quiet against the plain surface.
